Background of the Study

Polypharmacy, defined as the use of multiple medications by a patient, particularly common among the elderly, is a growing concern in healthcare. In Kano State, as in many other parts of Nigeria, elderly patients often experience multiple chronic conditions that require various medications. The management of polypharmacy in geriatric patients presents several challenges, including the risk of drug interactions, adverse effects, and the increased likelihood of medication non-adherence (Aliyu et al., 2023).

Nurses play a critical role in managing polypharmacy by ensuring proper medication administration, monitoring for adverse effects, and educating patients and their families about the importance of adherence to prescribed regimens (Sulaimon et al., 2024). However, the competency of geriatric nurses in managing polypharmacy in Kano State remains under-researched. This study aims to evaluate the competency of geriatric nurses in managing polypharmacy and the factors that influence their ability to provide optimal care.

Statement of the Problem

Polypharmacy among elderly individuals is a significant issue in Kano State, and managing it effectively requires specialized knowledge and skills. Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, play a key role in mitigating the risks associated with polypharmacy. However, their competency in managing polypharmacy is not well understood, which may lead to inadequate care and adverse health outcomes for elderly patients. This study seeks to assess the competency of geriatric nurses in managing polypharmacy in Kano State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the competency of geriatric nurses in managing polypharmacy in Kano State.

  2. To identify factors that influence the competency of geriatric nurses in managing polypharmacy in Kano State.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving the competency of geriatric nurses in managing polypharmacy in Kano State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of competency of geriatric nurses in managing polypharmacy in Kano State?

  2. What factors influence the competency of geriatric nurses in managing polypharmacy in Kano State?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the competency of geriatric nurses in managing polypharmacy in Kano State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Geriatric nurses in Kano State have varying levels of competency in managing polypharmacy, with many lacking adequate training.

  2. Factors such as educational background, training opportunities, and work experience significantly influence the competency of geriatric nurses in managing polypharmacy.

  3. Improving training and providing ongoing education will enhance the competency of geriatric nurses in managing polypharmacy in Kano State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on geriatric nurses working in both public and private healthcare facilities in Kano State. Limitations may include variability in training programs, nurse workload, and the availability of resources.

Definitions of Terms
